Why we use ECONYL® regenerated nylon

Why we use ECONYL® regenerated nylon

About our fabric

UBU Swimwear – why we use ECONYL® regenerated nylon

We use a luxury Italian fabric made from ECONYL® yarn, a 100% regenerated nylon fibre made from nylon waste otherwise polluting the Earth, like fishing nets, fabric scraps, carpet flooring and industrial plastic rescued from all over the world. It is, in our opinion, the very best eco-friendly fabric option for swimwear.  It has excellent UV protection at UPF 50+ (the maximum obtainable) and is impressively comfortable and extremely durable. Tests have also shown our fabric to be two times more resistant to degradation from chlorine and sun creams and oils - meaning your swimwear will last for seasons and seasons to come.

Carvico Vita

We use Carvico Vita fabric for all our swimwear. It is a luxury Italian-made fabric made from ECONYL® yarn, 100% regenerated fibre from pre- & post-consumer waste such as fishing nets and other nylon waste.

Carvico has many technological advantages including:

  • more resistant to chlorine, suncreams and oils than alternatives
  • has the highest possible UV Protection rating (UPF 50+)
  • Incredibly soft yet very durable and resistant to piling

For over 20 years, Carvico have proudly been awarded the prestigious OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certificate (Product Class I) certificate, which testifies that the fabrics produced don’t contain any kind of harmful substances.

Carvico were inspired to produce their sustainable fabrics by the impact plastic pollution was making on our seas. In February 2016 Carvico joined the Healthy Seas initiative in a bid to help clean pollution from our seas and oceans. And from this Vita came to life.

The issues caused by ghost fishing nets

  • Decomposing metals and (micro)plastics can be ingested by marine animals and passed along the food chain all the way to humans.
  • Fishnet remnants are a threat for marine animals to get caught in them and many suffer a horrible death. This is known as “ghost fishing”.
  • As some species are more harmed than others, it disturbs natural food chains and eventually marine biodiversity.
  • marine debris affects 86 % of all sea turtle species, 44 % of all seabird species, and 43 % of all marine mammal species
  • The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) estimates 130.000 whales and dolphins become entangled in fishing nets each year.

Healthy Seas

In 2013 the Healthy Seas initiative was started with the “Journey from Waste to Wear” concept. It is estimated that ghost fishing nets account for 10 percent of all marine litter, bearing a staggering weight of 640,000 tons, which ends up in our seas every year. Healthy Seas mission is to collect these ghost fishing nets from our seas and to work to inform and educate people about recycling and re-use and co-operate with fishermen for recovering discarded fishing nets. The fishing nets collected go to the Aquafil Spa regeneration plant in Ljubljana, Slovenia, which turns them, along with other pre- and post-consumer wastes such as tulle, carpet fluff, fabrics etc., into ECONYL® regenerated yarn.

ECONYL® regenerated nylon

UBU Swimwear uses ECONYL® Regenerated Yarn

ECONYL® yarn is the nylon fibre that is made from the regeneration process at the Aquafil plant. It is made from waste such as fishing nets from the oceans and aquaculture, fabric scraps from mills and carpets destined for landfill. It has the same features of standard nylon but is made at a much lower environmental cost. Traditional production methods for nylon are not eco-friendly, they require huge amounts of water and produce a lot of nitrous oxide, which is 10 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

Benefits of using ECONYL® yarn over standard nylon:

  • As well as being a solution to waste, ECONYL® regenerated nylon is also better when it comes to climate change. It reduces the global warming impact of nylon by up to 90% compared with the material from oil.
  • Reduces water, oil and energy consumption
  • Reduces air, water, and soil contamination
  • Recovers Nylon 6 waste from all over the world & allows it to be reused.
  • ECONYL® yarn can be recycled infinitely without losing quality, supporting the vision of a more circular fashion industry.
  • The goal is that once all products containing ECONYL® regenerated nylon are no longer useful to customers, they can go back into step one of the Regeneration System.

For every 10,000 tons of raw materials recycled into ECONYL® yarn 70,000 barrels of crude oil are saved, and 65,100 tons of CO2 emissions are avoided compared to traditional production methods.

So to spell out the reasons why we love recycled fabrics

At this stage we have all heard the statistics that the fashion industry is the second largest polluter in the world. From the stats given above it is easy to see the benefits of using recycled fabric over using virgin nylon.

  • ECONYL® yarn is a 100% regenerated nylon fibre made from nylon waste otherwise polluting the Earth, like fishing nets, fabric scraps, carpet flooring and industrial plastic rescued from all over the world.
  • ECONYL® regenerated yarn reduces the need to make new standard fabric reducing the environmental impact.
  • ECONYL® yarn has the capacity to be infinitely recyclable.
  • It’s exactly the same as standard nylon and can be regenerated, recreated and remoulded infinitely. That means you create new products and buy new products without ever having to use new resources.
  • ECONYL® regenerated fibre is helping to turn nylon waste into beautiful fashion pieces. Not only are they helping in the fight against plastic pollution they are a fantastic way to generate awareness – it still amazes me that people are so shocked and fascinated that our swimwear is made from ECONYL® regenerated nylon fabric when they see and feel how good it is.
  • The one thing ALL of our customers say to us is about how good the fabric FEELS, to touch and to wear.
  • Carvico Vita is a super durable and will last you for seasons and seasons to come - meaning you buy less, saving you money and saving the worlds resources.

Even though Carvico Vita fabric is superior and more durable than alternatives, you still need to look after your swimwear correctly to make sure it lasts to its potential. Please read our Swimwear Care tips to make sure your UBU Swimwear lasts for many many seasons to come.
